Seminar Series on Learning
As an educational charity we take seriously the need to promote discussion and dialogue on issues about learning. In this respect we are starting a series of free seminars on ideas and thinking about learning and how these relate to the world around us. Ian Cunningham will kick off this series with a session on Tuesday 28 April at 31 Harrington Road, Preston Park, Brighton (7pm to 9pm – refreshments available from 6.40pm). The theme of the evening will be:
How our society’s theories of schooling contribute to three major crises of our time – climate, health and economics.
Ian will lead off and then we will have a chance, in discussion, to explore questions such as:
-
Were the bankers and mathematicians too narrow in their ways of looking at the world, to the extent that they have created a global financial crisis? Did they learn, via schooling, to take a restricted view of their work?
-
If schooling rewards narrowness of thinking, does this reduce the chance of ecological awareness?
-
If different perspectives on the world are assessed-out through schooling, do we create an unbalanced society?
-
Do meritocratic rewards systems create a stratified society that means that higher status and wealthier individuals live longer and have healthier lives?
-
Does the fragmentation of thinking encouraged by schooling mean that collectively we become unable to think systemically?
-
What is needed to change things?
The second seminar in this series is likely to be on LEARNING TO LEAD A GOOD LIFE – WHAT DOES THIS REALLY MEAN? However we are open to suggestions as to future events and you are welcome to contact us with your thoughts.
Please contact Ian Cunningham for further information and to book this workshop (bookings to be received by June 21st at the latest). ![]()
